Afoxé Relíquias Africanas announces theme for Salvador Carnival: “We are all children of Oxalá”
Afoxé Relíquias Africanas, a traditional guardian of African-based culture founded in 2002 in the Pirajá community in Salvador, Bahia, has defined its manifesto of peace, unity, and ancestry for the next Carnival. With the theme “We are all children of Oxalá,” the group will take to the streets a universal message of fraternity, tolerance, and respect, under the white mantle of the orixá of creation and peace.
More than a festive celebration, this year's theme is a call for the union of peoples. It reinforces the afoxé's historical commitment to transforming Carnival into a territory for valuing Afro-Brazilian history and combating social divisions.
During the parade, the Batatinha circuit, located in Pelourinho, in the Historic Center of Salvador, will be flooded by the rhythmic beat of Ijexá, the sacred rhythm that evokes ancestry and spreads vibrations of harmony. The presentation will feature lively sections, realistic costumes, and rich fantasies that narrate the trajectory and resistance of the Jejes, Nagôs, and Bantus peoples, now united under the message of Oxalá. With strong international appeal and a proven track record of prominence in media outlets in Latin America, the United States, and Europe, the bloco (carnival group) is consolidating itself as an unmissable artistic and performative experience for tourists from all over the world.
It is worth highlighting that Relíquias Africanas doesn't just exist during the carnival days. The theme reflects the actions that the afoxé develops throughout the year, welcoming everyone from children to senior citizens through cultural workshops, meetings in the terreiros (religious spaces), conversation circles, capoeira, and participatory activities for the preservation of Afro music and dance. "We warmly invite all Bahians and tourists to get to know our bloco (carnival group) up close and to be part of our plural and ancestral Carnival, where diversity meets the same beat of peace," urges the board of Afoxé Relíquias Africanas.
