Grandparents' Day Celebrates Stories of Overcoming Challenges, Art, and Wisdom that Inspire Generations
This Sunday, July 26th, the world celebrates Grandparents' Day, a date dedicated to recognizing the love, dedication, and teachings of those who play a fundamental role in the formation of families and society. The celebration honors Saint Joachim and Saint Anne, parents of Mary and grandparents of Jesus Christ, according to the tradition of the Catholic Church.
The date is also a special moment to highlight inspiring journeys, such as that of the artisan Joana Lopes, 83 years old, affectionately known as "Ju Fuxiqueira". Recognized for her work with recycled fabrics and for valuing sustainable crafts, Joana won second place in the costume design contest of the Balaio Verde Project, conceived by environmental activist, journalist, and columnist Luzia Moraes, with a costume made for the journalist, presenter, and CEO of Rádio Doinha Prata Web FM, Brazil, Africa, Portugal, and Jamaica, in addition to the programs EI!!! Are You There?! and the Voice of Angola, hosted by Angolan journalist, writer, and speaker Azenaida Miguel.
Another honoree is Odete Crispina, a reference of talent, resilience, and love for popular culture. At 78 years old, she remains active as a percussionist, artisan, dancer, storyteller, actress, and voice actress. In her artistic career, she has worked alongside names like Magary Lord, Wilson Café, and Sarajane, accumulating experiences that enrich Bahian culture.
Odete is part of the traditional group Samba de Roda Vida e Tradição, conceived and led by vocalist Glofeuda (Kell). With over 15 years of history, the group has Ivanzinho Pacapuco as its teacher and master, responsible for teaching, guiding, and transmitting knowledge to its members for eight years. Under his leadership, the project strengthens the preservation of the roots of samba de roda and contributes to the cultural development of its participants.
On this Grandparents' Day, the tribute extends to all grandfathers and grandmothers on the planet, especially those who, through art, education, culture, and love, leave eternal marks on the generations that succeed them.
More than celebrating a date, July 26th is an opportunity to thank grandparents for their legacy of affection, wisdom, and inspiration—values that continue to transform lives and strengthen families around the world.
