ANCESTRAL MUSICALITY AT SALVADOR CARNIVAL

With Black November approaching and summer celebrations in the Americas, we share an experience marked by ancestry, religiosity, and sensitivity. Enabling and creating a space for the exchange of knowledge, aiming to strengthen the history of Afro-Brazilian tradition, Afoxé is committed to empowering children, youth, adults, and seniors through participatory activities, workshops, gatherings at the terreiro, and conversation circles throughout the year. Driven by the desire to keep alive the African-based tradition in music, entertainment, art, and culture, a group from the Pirajá community in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, launched the "Afoxé Relíquias Africanas" group in 2002.
With lively wings that tell the story of the Jejês, Nagôs, and Bantu peoples, realistic costumes and attire, vibrant and ancestral musicality, and a striking and organized stage presence, the bloco brings all its irreverence and connection between Africa and Latin America to the carnival circuit.
Watching the "Afoxé Relíquias Africanas" parade on the Batatinha circuit (Salvador's Historic Center) is a celebration of Afro music, dance, capoeira, and Black performances that can only be truly experienced at Salvador's Carnival—an opportunity that should be experienced by every human being on the planet.

CARNIVAL WITH CONSCIENCE

The Ska Reggae Cultural Group, active in the Brazilian scene since 1995, develops sociocultural activities focused on inclusion, racial identity, memory, ancestry, and anti-racist carnival movements, aiming to bring Afro-Bahian culture to the world. Using its own resources and government subsidies focused on African-Brazilian groups, through public selection, Ska Reggae parades through the Historic Center of Salvador during Carnival, encouraging the development of a civic culture with all the beauty, ancestral roots, and historical legacy they carry.
Focused on this commitment to promoting, preserving, and valuing Afro-Brazilian culture, the group attracts new members, partners, and tourists each year who appreciate the local culture.
In 2025, a group of Argentines were enchanted by the Bloco's beauty, musicality, and irreverence, reinforcing the importance of a popular, diverse, and inclusive Carnival and promising to return to enjoy the Bloco's parade again. To our readers, we leave as a Carnival tip the opportunity to take a stroll through the Historic Center of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, following the Ska Reggae Group, bringing the colors and essence of reggae to the biggest street party in the world, thus disseminating the mission of the group, which since 1995 has paid homage to the ancestral Jamaican genre, the sound of the communities and the resistance of the black body that moves us so much.
